Preparing Your Lawn for Spring
As we finally start to see the first signs of spring, the time has come to get both your mower and your lawn ready for the rest of the year. With so many things to do, it can be easy to accidentally forget a step. Luckily, Morgan Power Equipment has provided this information on how to prepare your lawn and mower for spring.
Clear Debris From Your Lawn
Before you can do any mowing, you will have to clear away any debris that has settled on your lawn during the winter months. Otherwise, the debris might get into your mower’s undercarriage or make it harder for your lawn to absorb any lawn care products you might be employing.
Prepare Your Mower
The next order of business is to take care of your mower itself. Too much idle time is bad for a machine, so you will have to go down the list of maintenance tasks. Remove any debris that you find stuck in your mower’s undercarriage and check the blades to ensure that they are still sharp. Dull blades rip grass rather than cut it, making your mower less efficient and damaging your yard. Be sure to sharpen or replace your mower’s blades as necessary. If you own a riding mower, fill up the fuel tank and change out the oil, air filter, and spark plugs if this wasn’t done before putting your mower into storage.
Nourish Your Lawn
Winter can take its toll on your yard. Use fertilizer, insecticides, and weed killers at your discretion. However, always keep in mind the environmental impact of these products. You should also find out if there are any local laws or restrictions in regards to what you are allowed to put on your lawn.
Your lawn may have developed bare patches over the winter. Plant new seed and water it daily until it is two inches high or as high as the surrounding grass. Until it reaches this height, hold off on cutting it. After your first mowing, we recommend adding fertilizer to the formerly bare patch to encourage further growth.
Cut Your Lawn
If you have a motorized lawn mower, let it sit in the sun for an hour before your first mowing in the year, as this will help it start up a little easier. Try to remove about 1/3 of each grass blade on your lawn. To prevent overgrowth, mow every five days during the first six weeks of spring.
