Intro to Chainsaw Maintenance
Like any motorized tool, a chainsaw will wear down over time. After repeated uses, you will eventually realize that your saw just isn’t working as well as it once did. If you want to get the most out of your chainsaw, you will have to do a little repair work. That is why Morgan Power Equipment has created this helpful introduction to chainsaw maintenance.
Sharpening The Chain
A dull chain not only requires that you use more energy when cutting, but it is also more likely to result in an accident. If you feel like you are expending more energy than you should while using your chainsaw, it is time to sharpen it. Luckily, this can be done at home if you have the correct tools. If not, you can always get help from an expert.
Replacing The Chain
Eventually, you may find that your chainsaw isn't cutting like it used to even with a freshly sharpened chain. At that point, it may be best to replace the chain altogether. We recommended yearly chain replacement for maximum performance. If you keep a replacement chain on hand, you can perform the replacement yourself.
Lubricating The Chain
Like all machines with moving parts, a chainsaw needs the occasional lubrication to do its job well, so do so before starting a job. If the chain is unable to move smoothly across the bar, it can be disastrous, so every saw has a reservoir of chain oil to keep it lubricated. During particularly long jobs, you may want to pause halfway through to top off the reservoir.
Checking The Chain’s Tension
Ideally, your chainsaw’s chain should be as tight as possible for the best performance. Loose chains may jump off the chain bar and cause injuries, so always check the tension before starting a job. This will also help avoid damage to your chainsaw. Your owner’s manual should have information telling you how to tighten your chain. Much like the oil, it is a good idea to check the tension partway through a longer job.
