Zero Turn Mowers
If you’re looking for precision and speed, you might want to consider a zero turn mower. These mowers use a special turning and driving system to provide an extremely tight turn radius. You’ll be able to mow a strip of lawn from one end to the other, turn around and be perfectly aligned with the strip you just mowed. You won’t have any annoying gaps or areas needing touch ups when using a zero turn mower.
These machines average an impressive 5 to 8 mph cutting speed. If you choose to spring for a professional model, you can get up to a whopping 13 mph. Keep in mind that if your grass is over six inches, zero turn mowers aren’t a good choice. These mowers aren’t designed to cut tall grass and if they happen to run into anything unseen like a stump or rock, there could be some serious and expensive damage. Zero turn mowers are more expensive than lawn tractors due to their superior performance.
Lawn Tractors
Lawn tractors tend to be the most popular and cost-effective option offering a seated, steering wheel drive design that makes them easy to use. Of course, the turning radius isn’t as strong as a zero turn mower so maneuvering can be a bit tricky at times. You might find yourself reversing the lawn tractor so you can realign and start next to the previous line you mowed. These mowers also travel at slower speeds which can be impractical for tall grass and big fields. If you have a small lawn you need to maintain regularly, then lawn tractors are an excellent choice.
Pull Mowers
Another option is a pull mower, which is a small implement that can be pulled behind a tractor or an ATV. More often than not, pull mowers are best suited for handling grass over six inches tall and in some cases, they can also tackle non-grass vegetation. These mowers tend to have a set of spinning blades powered by either a power take off (PTO) or an independent engine that’s located on top of the mowing deck. Speed and maneuverability will depend on the tow vehicle, but they’re usually less maneuverable than zero turn mowers and lawn tractors. Price can vary as well but if you have a massive property with overgrown land, this could be the best choice.
Collecting vs. Mulching
The last thing you’ll need to decide on is whether you’re going to go with a clipping collection system or a mulching blade. A clipping collection system is usually preferred by professional landscapers because they leave a clean, manicured surface that looks beautiful in heavily landscaped areas. For those who don’t necessarily need a totally clean mowing surface, a mulching blade might be a better option. The mulching blade works so that grass clippings get shredded up and left on the grass to insulate the turf from sunlight and heat. The clippings will also get composted back into the grass so their nutrients aren’t lost. An important factor to consider is that a clipping collection system is much pricier than a mulching blade.
