Spring Lawn Preparations
As the days begin to grow longer once again, you might be thinking about your spring routine. From spring cleaning to outdoor to-do lists, the days are about to get busy! After several long months of colder weather, our team at Morgan Power Equipment has put together this brief guide to help you prepare your lawn for the coming season.
Maintenance Tasks
It’s likely that your lawn equipment, especially your mower, has been sitting in storage during the winter months. Because of this, it will need some attention before it can perform optimally.
No matter what type of mower you own, you will want to do a quick inspection before use. Note any leaks or signs of issues that occurred during storage.
After doing a once-over inspection, you’ll move on to the basic maintenance tasks. First, check that there is no debris in the undercarriage of the mower. Then, check your blades! You’ll want to make sure they are sharp because dull mower blades will rip rather than cut the grass, damaging your lawn and making your equipment less efficient.
Next, check fuel levels or charge on your mower if it’s electric. If you operate a riding mower, you’ll need to complete a few extra steps as needed: change the oil, air filter, and spark plugs.
Address any issues and have your equipment professionally serviced if necessary.
Clean Up Your Lawn
Winter storms can cause debris to accumulate on your lawn, such as twigs, rocks, and other materials. Before you can nourish or cut your grass, it’s important to have it completely clear from debris! Not only will it be safer as you operate your equipment, but it will help your lawn absorb nutrients more easily and help your mower run more efficiently.
Add Nutrients to Your Lawn
Harsh weather not only causes debris, but it can be rough on the soil. Adding nutrient-dense products or organic matter can add life back to your lawn! You know your yard best, so evaluate what might be needed to help it thrive. If you know it’s susceptible to weeds or insects, consider using something that will target these problems.
Along with added nutrients like fertilizers, you may need to plant grass seed in bare areas as well. Follow the instructions on the seed bag and water it daily. Once it has taken root and sprouted to several inches, evaluate the overall health of the grass and determine if it’s time to mow!
Mow Your Lawn
If you’ve determined your grass is well-nourished and the planted areas have grown to look comparable to the rest of the lawn, you are ready to mow for the first time this season! Aim to start by removing ⅓ of the blade and create a schedule to mow every five days during the first six weeks of spring. This routine will help prevent overgrowth and keep your grass as healthy as possible.
Your spring lawn should look amazing when you complete an equipment inspection, prepare your lawn, and add nutrients to the soil!
