Terrain can have a huge impact on a mower’s performance. Some mowers can handle a slope fairly well, while others can only be safely used on flat ground. If you’re interested in purchasing a lawn mower and want to know which mower type would work best with your lawn’s terrain, this guide from Morgan Power Equipment has some useful information.

For Smooth, Level Terrain

Smooth, flat lawns with even terrain shouldn’t present any real issues no matter which type of mower you are using. If you have less than an acre of grass to mower, a standard walk-behind mower will work fine. If your lawn is larger than that, consider investing in a riding mower to save time.

For Rough or Hilly Terrain

Uneven terrain with a lot of slopes and inclines is much more difficult to mow. The danger of your mower tipping over is very real. One solution is to purchase a self-propelled walk-behind mower. Since these mowers are self-propelled, there is less of a danger that you’ll get tired partway up the slope and accidentally allow the mower to tip. If you want a riding mower that can be used in rough terrain, find a model that prioritizes balance and handling.

For Lawns with Obstacles and Narrow Spaces

If you have a big, empty field with nothing but grass, then a standard riding mower will work fine. However, if there are rocks, trees, garden beds, and more intermixed among the grass, you might need a lawn mower that is a bit more maneuverable. Zero-turn mowers and stand-on mowers are both agile and efficient. If you’ve got a big yard with a lot of obstacles to avoid, then one of these mowers might be your best bet.
