With the end of winter, it’s time to start thinking about spring and summer landscaping needs. Your lawn has languished under snow, ice, rain, and cold temperatures for months now, so it’s going to need a lot of tender loving care to get it back into fighting shape.

So how do you prepare your lawn to get it lush and green again? Morgan Power Equipment is your local lawn mower dealership, located in Halifax, MA. That’s why we’ve provided this guide to preparing your lawn for the warm season.

Clean Debris Off Your Lawn

Your first step is to clear your lawn of all the debris that’s accrued over the course of winter. This usually consists of sticks, branches, dry leaves and dead vegetation. You’ll also want to put away any items you encounter, too, so that nothing can get caught in your mower. Leaving dead plants and branches on your lawn and attempting to mow over them can lead to this matter getting entangled in your lawn mower’s undercarriage, which can damage it.

Ready Your Lawn Mower

Your lawn mower has been sitting in storage for months, so you’ll need to perform some light maintenance to get it functional again. If you didn’t clean your mower in the fall, take the time to clean and hose it off now, including that undercarriage! Your next task will be to ensure that the blades are sharpened well, as dull blades can rip grass and damage your lawn.

If you have a riding mower, then you’re going to need to fill up the fuel tank, change the oil, switch out oil and air filters, and inspect the spark plugs before you can run it. Allow the mower to warm up in the sun for an hour before you start cutting the grass.

Add Nourishment

As we noted above, harsh New England winters take a huge toll on the state of your lawn. Adding nutrient-loaded products can help to bring it back to its lush, green glory. Make sure you’re also applying any insecticides or weed killers at this time, too. Bare patches will likely need some seed added.

Water the seeds every day until it’s tall enough to be cut. Don’t mow your lawn until all the bare patches have grown in to at least 2” in height. You’ll also want to add some fertilizers after that first mowing to further condition your grass.

Trim The Grass

It’s finally time to cut that grass! While mowing, you’ll want to remove about a third of the grass blade for the best results. Make sure that you’re mowing your grass at least once every five days for the first few months of spring and early summer to prevent overgrowth, as trying to cut overly tall grass can stunt root growth. Mow in straight lines for an attractive and tidy result. You can even try to mow on the diagonal for a different look!

We hope that our guide to spring lawn maintenance helps you to recover the green grass you crave so the kids can play on it and you can relax and enjoy your lawn.
